China has expressed support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its efforts to ensure the safety and security of nuclear facilities following recent drone attacks on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine.
Speaking at a special meeting of the IAEA’s 35-nation Board of Governors on Thursday, Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the agency, emphasized the high nuclear safety risks the ZNPP faces amid ongoing conflict. He warned that “the impact of nuclear accidents transcends borders and there is no room for error.”
The meeting was convened at the request of Russia and Ukraine to address the attacks on the ZNPP, which occurred on Sunday and Tuesday. According to the IAEA, these incidents were the first direct assaults on the plant since November 2022. The Zaporizhzhia facility, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been a focal point of international concern amid the hostilities in the region.
Li Song called on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could jeopardize nuclear safety. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with the international community to support the IAEA’s constructive role in safeguarding nuclear facilities and preventing potential nuclear disasters.
