Historic Leap: Hong Kong’s First Taikonaut Reaches Tiangong Station

In a historic milestone for space exploration, the Shenzhou-23 crew has successfully arrived at the Tiangong space station, marking a proud moment for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR). Among the crew is Li Jiaying, the first taikonaut from Hong Kong, who is serving as the mission's payload specialist.

The journey began this past Sunday with a successful launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. The event was witnessed by a high-level Hong Kong delegation, who described the moment as one that made "the whole of Hong Kong proud."

This mission underscores the growing synergy between Hong Kong's technological ambitions and national goals. Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, stated that the city is actively aligning its innovative development with the national 15th Five-Year Plan. He emphasized that Hong Kong will continue to play a vital role in contributing to the country's broader space development efforts on the Chinese mainland and beyond.

The impact of the mission extends beyond strategic goals, inspiring the next generation of researchers and intellectuals. Professor Anderson Shum, Vice-President (Research) at City University of Hong Kong, highlighted that the achievement has encouraged the scientific community to "dream bigger and be more ambitious" in their pursuits of knowledge and cosmic exploration.
