China Launches World’s First Wind-Powered Underwater Data Center

China has unveiled a groundbreaking leap in sustainable technology with the completion of the world's first wind-powered underwater data center (UDC) in Shanghai. The project, located in the Lin-gang Special Area of the Chinese mainland, represents a $226 million investment and boasts a 24-megawatt power capacity, setting new standards for eco-friendly computing infrastructure.

Operational since Tuesday, the UDC leverages offshore wind energy to achieve over 95% green electricity usage. Compared to traditional land-based facilities, it reduces power consumption by 22.8%, eliminates water usage entirely, and cuts land use by more than 90%. This innovation addresses growing concerns about the environmental impact of data centers, which account for nearly 1% of global electricity demand.

Local authorities describe the project as a milestone in merging marine renewable energy with digital infrastructure. "This demonstrates how technological innovation can drive both economic growth and environmental stewardship," stated a representative from the Lin-gang Special Area administrative committee.

The development aligns with China's broader push for carbon neutrality and could influence global data center design. Analysts suggest the model may appeal to coastal nations seeking sustainable solutions for cloud computing and AI infrastructure demands.
