A tragic incident has shaken the industrial sector of the Republic of Korea (ROK) after a fatal explosion occurred at a prominent aerospace facility this Monday.
According to reports from the Yonhap news agency citing fire authorities, the death toll has risen to five following a blast at the Hanwha Aerospace plant in Daejeon, located approximately 150 kilometers south of the capital, Seoul.
The emergency unfolded at 10:59 a.m. (0159 GMT) when authorities received an urgent call reporting the explosion. In a swift operation, fire authorities issued a level-1 response by 11:17 a.m. and managed to bring the blaze under control by 11:49 a.m. Along with the five fatalities, two other individuals were reported injured in the accident.
Hanwha Aerospace is recognized as the ROK's leading aerospace and defense company, making the incident a significant concern for industrial safety and operational standards within the sector. This tragedy follows a history of instability at the site; the plant previously suffered propellant-related accidents in 2018 and 2019, which resulted in the deaths of eight workers.
Preliminary assessments by the police and fire authorities indicate that the explosion occurred on the first floor of the plant. While the immediate fire has been extinguished, the exact cause of the blast remains unidentified. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to determine the root cause of the accident.
