In a proactive effort to safeguard its citizens and maintain economic stability, the Rwandan government has announced a comprehensive strategy to prevent and respond to a potential Ebola outbreak.
Speaking in Kigali this past Saturday, Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva expressed confidence in the nation's readiness. He emphasized that the government has put in place robust preventive, surveillance, and treatment measures designed to protect lives without disrupting the country's socioeconomic activities. The Prime Minister urged residents to remain vigilant, maintain high standards of hygiene, and promptly report any suspected cases to health authorities.
Minister of Health Sabin Nsanzimana elaborated on the technical aspects of the preparedness plan, noting that Rwanda has built capacity across five critical fronts: communication, surveillance, diagnostic capabilities, contact tracing, and case management. This includes the establishment of specialized treatment centers and the training of personnel through rigorous simulations on infection prevention and control.
While no cases of Ebola have been reported within Rwanda, the government is closely monitoring the situation in neighboring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The DRC is currently grappling with a significant outbreak that began on May 15, 2026. According to the latest reports released on Saturday, the DRC has seen 488 confirmed cases and 86 deaths.
To mitigate the risk of cross-border transmission, Rwanda introduced strict entry requirements in May. Rwandan nationals and foreign residents arriving from or transiting through the DRC must undergo a mandatory quarantine if their travel occurred within the past 30 days. Furthermore, foreign nationals who have visited or transited through the DRC within the same window are currently barred from entering the country.
By combining stringent border controls with a strengthened domestic laboratory network and specialized medical training, Rwanda aims to stay ahead of the virus, reflecting a broader regional commitment to health security in East Africa.
