Macao SAR Legislative Assembly Election Campaigns Kick Off

Campaigning for the eighth Legislative Assembly of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) officially began on Saturday, marking the start of a 14-day period for candidates to engage voters ahead of the September 14 election. Over 20 candidate lists are participating in the race, with campaigns centered on platforms addressing economic diversification, social welfare, and sustainable development for the region.

Seng Ioi Man, chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, emphasized the importance of lawful and transparent procedures during a launch event at Tap Seac Square. "We urge all stakeholders to uphold electoral integrity and foster a fair environment," he stated, highlighting efforts to ensure compliance with the Legislative Assembly Election Law.

The election, held every four years, will determine 33 legislators through direct and indirect voting. Analysts note this cycle’s focus on post-pandemic recovery strategies and integration with the Greater Bay Area initiative. Residents of Macao have shown increased interest in civic participation, with voter registration numbers rising by 8% compared to 2021.

Authorities have deployed enhanced monitoring systems to prevent misconduct, reflecting Macao SAR’s commitment to maintaining its reputation for stable governance under the "one country, two systems" framework.
