On Monday, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a significant meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. The meeting focused on reviewing work reports and strategies aimed at driving high-quality development and ecological protection, particularly in the Yellow River Basin.
The Political Bureau reviewed reports from the leading Party members’ groups of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee. These reports highlighted accomplishments over the past year and outlined work plans for 2025.
Emphasizing progress for the coming year, the meeting called on these leading groups to prioritize actionable results and collaborative efforts to advance reforms. The goal is to contribute significantly to China’s high-quality development and modernization in 2025.
The Secretariat was urged to enhance political capabilities, enforce strict self-governance, and effectively accomplish tasks assigned by the CPC Central Committee.
A major highlight of the meeting was the focus on ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. The Yellow River, often referred to as the “Mother River” of China, is vital to the country’s ecological security and cultural heritage. The meeting underscored the necessity of fully enforcing the Yellow River Protection Law to safeguard this crucial region.
Key initiatives discussed included enhancing water source conservation in the upper reaches of the river, strengthening soil and water conservation in the middle reaches, and advancing wetland protection and ecological governance in the lower reaches. The meeting also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of dams, reservoirs, and other critical infrastructure.
Furthermore, efforts will be made to synergize the Yellow River Basin’s development with broader national strategies, such as the large-scale development of the western region and the rise of the central region. There is also a commitment to holistically protect cultural heritage and promote the integration of culture and tourism, fostering sustainable economic growth alongside environmental stewardship.
