In a significant move to deepen bilateral relations, Chinese Premier Li Qiang has pledged enhanced strategic communication and closer collaboration with Laos. During a meeting with General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, who is currently on a state visit to China, Premier Li emphasized the shared goal of promoting the China-Laos community with a shared future to a higher level.
The meeting comes at a pivotal moment, as 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Premier Li noted that the relationship has entered its most prosperous period in history, characterized by mutual reliance and strong strategic guidance from the top leadership of both parties and countries.
A central focus of the discussions was the alignment of development strategies. The Chinese premier highlighted the intent to fully leverage China's zero-tariff policy to expand bilateral trade. Key infrastructure projects, including the further advancement of the China-Laos Railway and the accelerated construction of the China-Laos Economic Corridor, remain top priorities. Furthermore, both nations aim to expand cooperation in cutting-edge sectors such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, energy, and mineral resources to produce tangible results for their populations.
To bolster economic ties, China has expressed its willingness to import more high-quality products from Laos and encourage enterprises from the Chinese mainland to invest in the country. In return, Premier Li expressed hope that Laos would continue to provide a favorable business environment for Chinese companies.
Beyond economics, the two leaders discussed cultural and social bonds. As 2026 is designated as the Year of China-Laos Friendship, China is ready to collaborate with Laos on a series of celebratory activities and deepen cooperation in education, healthcare, tourism, and culture.
On the global stage, Premier Li called for close coordination to uphold a rules-based multilateral trading system, safeguarding free trade and economic globalization against current global challenges.
President Thongloun expressed gratitude for China's long-term support and reaffirmed that Laos will firmly adhere to the one-China principle. He emphasized Laos's support for China's core interests regarding the Taiwan region, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong. He further noted that Laos is committed to strengthening coordination under mechanisms like the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation to ensure continued progress in their shared journey toward a community with a shared future.
