China Assures Fairness in Anti-Dumping Probe of EU Brandy Imports

China’s Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao, has emphasized that the ongoing anti-dumping investigation into brandy imports from the European Union (EU) is not aimed at any specific member state and carries no predetermined outcomes. Speaking in Paris on Monday during meetings with French brandy trade associations and producers, Wang assured that the probe will be conducted openly and transparently in accordance with Chinese law and World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations.

The investigation was initiated in January after the China Alcoholic Drinks Association filed a complaint on behalf of the domestic brandy industry. It targets EU-produced brandy imported between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023, in containers holding less than 200 liters. The probe is scheduled to conclude before January 5, 2025, with a possible six-month extension under special circumstances.

French brandy producers and trade associations expressed their willingness to cooperate fully with the Chinese authorities during the investigation. They also reiterated their commitment to the Chinese market, acknowledging its vast consumption potential.

Wang highlighted the significance of 2024 as it marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France. He underscored the broad prospects for economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. “China is willing to strengthen cooperation with the French business community to promote the stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations,” Wang stated.

He also noted that China has designated 2024 as the “Year of Promoting Consumption,” which is expected to boost demand for imported quality products like French brandy. Wang encouraged French companies to actively engage with the Chinese market and share in the opportunities arising from China’s development.
