In a strong diplomatic response, China has expressed its firm opposition to the United States' decision to intensify its blockade and sanctions against Cuba. A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry recently characterized the latest US actions as evidence of "hegemonic and domineering behavior."
The tension escalated after the United States imposed targeted sanctions on Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, as well as individuals and entities closely linked to the nation's leadership. These measures extended to family members, including President Diaz-Canel's wife and stepson, and the son and grandson of former Cuban leader Raul Castro.
Responding to the measures, President Diaz-Canel asserted that the increased pressure is a calculated attempt to reinforce the existing blockade. He vowed that Cuba would remain resilient against what he described as "imperial aggression." Cuba's Foreign Ministry further condemned the move as a "ruthless act of economic aggression," warning that such tactics could be used by Washington to justify more dangerous escalations, including potential military aggression against the island.
China's reaction underscores its commitment to supporting Havana. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that adding Cuban leaders to a sanctions list highlights "bullying practices" that are out of step with international norms. China pointed out that the global community seeks stability in Cuba and warned that any US attempts to destabilize the region would likely backfire.
Urging an immediate end to the blockade and all forms of coercion, China called on the United States to stop infringing upon the Cuban people's right to survive and thrive. Beijing reiterated its unwavering support for Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, pledging to stand against external interference.
