Kenya’s President Nominates Kithure Kindiki as New Deputy President After Impeachment

Kenya is witnessing a significant political shift as President William Ruto nominates Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President. This nomination comes in the wake of the Senate’s decision to impeach the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.

On Friday, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced in parliament, “I have received a message from the President regarding the nomination of Professor Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacancy which has occurred in the office.” The parliament is now tasked with voting on Ruto’s choice within the next 60 days.

The impeachment of Gachagua marks a pivotal moment in Kenya’s political landscape. On Thursday evening, Kenyan senators voted to impeach the 59-year-old on five out of eleven charges. Despite his absence at the impeachment trial—his lawyer cited hospitalization—Gachagua was found guilty of “gross violation” of the constitution. Charges included threatening judges and engaging in ethnically divisive politics. He was, however, cleared of corruption and money-laundering allegations.

Gachagua denied all accusations, labeling them as “nonsensical” and “outrageous.” He expressed his discontent, stating he was being treated like a “spent cartridge.” His impeachment follows a similar motion that was overwhelmingly approved by the lower house National Assembly last week.

The nomination of Kithure Kindiki, a seasoned politician and legal expert, signals President Ruto’s intent to stabilize his administration amid political turmoil. As the parliament prepares to vote on the nomination, the nation watches closely, anticipating the implications this leadership change may have on Kenya’s future.

Kenya’s political developments are of significant interest to global observers, including those in Asia, given their potential impact on international relations and economic partnerships. The coming weeks will be critical in determining the direction of Kenya’s governance and its engagement on the global stage.
