China Achieves Major Breakthrough in Green Hydrogen-Coal Co-Combustion

In a significant leap toward a sustainable energy future, China has achieved a major technological breakthrough in low-carbon hydrogen-coal co-combustion. This new development enables a 50% green hydrogen co-firing ratio and, for the first time, proves the possibility of 100% pure hydrogen combustion.

The innovation, led by China Energy Group, centers on a fully self-developed hydrogen-coal mixed low-nitrogen burner. To ensure operational safety, the system incorporates a comprehensive protection framework that monitors the entire process, from the transport of hydrogen to its final combustion within the furnace.

This technology allows hydrogen and pulverized coal to be seamlessly mixed and burned inside the boiler. During testing, the system successfully achieved a hydrogen blending ratio of 50% by heat value. When powered by green hydrogen, this advancement translates directly into a 50% reduction in both coal consumption and carbon emissions, while simultaneously maintaining strict control over nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

For the Chinese mainland, which currently operates the world's largest installed coal-fired power capacity, this breakthrough is more than just a technical victory. Industry analysts emphasize that the low-carbon transformation of the coal power sector is critical for meeting the nation's "dual carbon" goals: peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving full carbon neutrality before 2060.

This milestone validates a promising pathway for drastically cutting emissions from existing coal-fired power units and promotes a more integrated development between traditional coal power and emerging new energy sources.

The development aligns with broader industrial trends. According to a report from the National Energy Administration released last year, China's hydrogen energy industry is rapidly evolving, moving from an initial trial and exploration stage into a new phase characterized by orderly development and innovation-driven breakthroughs.
