Beijing, China – Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed Vanuatu as a good friend and partner in the Pacific Islands region during a meeting with Prime Minister Charlot Salwai on Friday at the Great Hall of the People.
"China is a promoter of and contributor to peaceful coexistence and common development in the Pacific Islands region," President Xi stated. He emphasized China’s commitment to supporting developing countries, adding, "China will always vote for the developing countries in the United Nations."
Highlighting the significance of their 42-year diplomatic relationship, Xi remarked that China views its relations with Pacific Island countries from the perspective of building a shared community for mankind. He expressed China’s readiness to provide assistance within its capacity for the economic and social development of island nations like Vanuatu.
"China maintains that all countries are equal regardless of their size, pursues common interests, and puts friendship first in cooperation," Xi affirmed. "We seek neither power competition nor a geopolitical sphere of influence. China does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries or force them to take sides."
A Community with a Shared Future in the New Era
In a joint statement issued on Friday, China and Vanuatu agreed to upgrade their comprehensive strategic partnership to build a community with a shared future in the new era. President Xi emphasized deepening high-level political mutual trust and aligning development strategies between the two nations.
"China is willing to exchange governance experience with Vanuatu and share development opportunities brought by Chinese modernization," Xi said. He called for strengthening cooperation in infrastructure, economy, trade, investment, and climate change, encouraging Chinese businesses to invest in Vanuatu.
Reiterating China’s support, Xi concluded, "China will continue to provide economic and technical assistance to Vanuatu without any political attachments, helping it secure development and prosperity."
