Chinese PLA Conducts Military Drills Around Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has launched joint military drills surrounding the island of Taiwan, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. According to statements from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday, the exercises serve as a strong punishment for separatist activities by “Taiwan independence” forces and a stern warning against external interference.

Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the ministry, emphasized at a regular briefing that the drills are “necessary and legitimate,” aligning with international customary practices and laws. “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory,” Wang asserted, stating that any pursuit of “Taiwan independence” is a dead end.

The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command initiated the exercises, code-named Joint Sword-2024A, on Thursday morning. The drills encompass the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south, and east of the island of Taiwan, including regions around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin. The operations involve various branches of the military, including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, and are scheduled to continue through Friday.

Wang urged the United States to cease encouraging and supporting “Taiwan independence” forces and to stop interfering in China’s internal affairs. He warned that any actions threatening China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity would be met with a resolute response.

The drills underscore Beijing’s firm stance on Taiwan amid growing international scrutiny. Analysts suggest that these military activities could have significant implications for regional stability and cross-strait relations.
