The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has called on the European Union (EU) to engage in constructive dialogue and foster healthy competition to properly handle ongoing economic and trade frictions. In a recent statement, the ministry emphasized the importance of advocating win-win cooperation and addressing legitimate concerns to avoid escalating tensions.
Amid concerns from Chinese-funded enterprises and business associations operating in countries such as Spain, Portugal, and Greece, officials noted that some business representatives feel the EU is continually suppressing Chinese enterprises under the guise of so-called fair competition.
Wang Wentao, China’s Minister of Commerce, responded to these concerns by asserting that accusations of “unfair competition” against China are groundless. “Fair competition is the consensus of all countries and the cornerstone of international exchange; it cannot be defined by a few countries,” Wang stated.
He elaborated that true fair competition involves striving for self-improvement rather than hindering others. “It should be open, cooperative, equal, and mutually beneficial, rather than exclusive,” Wang said. He also stressed the importance of adhering to internationally recognized rules rather than altering them arbitrarily.
The ministry’s call for dialogue comes at a critical time for China-EU relations, with both sides navigating complex economic landscapes. By promoting healthy competition and open communication, China aims to strengthen ties with the EU and ensure a stable environment for international trade.
