China’s Wang Yi Urges France to Promote Pragmatic EU-China Relations

In a recent phone conversation with Emmanuel Bonne, the French President’s Diplomatic Counselor, senior Chinese official Wang Yi called on France to encourage the European Union to pursue a positive and pragmatic policy toward China. Wang Yi emphasized the critical role of China-France cooperation in addressing global challenges amidst a volatile international landscape.

Wang Yi, who is a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, highlighted that both China and France uphold principles of independence and win-win cooperation. He noted that both nations oppose division and bloc confrontation, practice multilateralism, and firmly uphold the United Nations Charter and international law.

“The international community expects China and France to form a common position and speak on major issues bearing on world peace and stability, as well as the future and destiny of humanity,” Wang Yi stated. He expressed China’s willingness to elevate bilateral cooperation with France across various fields, thereby enhancing the significant role of both countries in tackling global challenges.

Emmanuel Bonne conveyed France’s rejection of bloc confrontation and expressed intent to use the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China as an opportunity to intensify high-level exchanges and strengthen practical cooperation. He emphasized the importance of both nations working together to de-escalate global hotspots, address challenges such as climate change, bridge the North-South divide, and advance the development of France-China and Europe-China relations.

The two officials agreed to collaborate in areas such as artificial intelligence and to enhance coordination in combating climate change. They also discussed improving the “from French farm to Chinese dinner table” initiative, aiming to create a favorable environment for businesses from both countries to invest and operate.

In addition, they exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern, including the Ukraine crisis and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, underscoring the need for joint efforts to promote peace and stability.
