In a dramatic conclusion to one of the longest evasion stories in recent European history, Daniela Klette, a former member of the notorious Baader-Meinhof gang, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. The ruling, delivered this past Wednesday, follows a series of high-stakes armed robberies Klette committed while living as a fugitive for over 30 years.
A Legacy of Radicalism
Klette, now 67, was part of the Red Army Faction (RAF), a radical anti-capitalist group that shook the foundations of West Germany in the 1970s and 1980s through a campaign of bombings, kidnappings, and killings. Although the RAF officially disbanded in 1998, Klette remained a shadow in the underworld, evading authorities until her eventual capture.
Meticulous Heists and a 'Dummy Bazooka'
The court heard that Klette's life on the run was funded by a series of carefully planned robberies between 1999 and 2016. Prosecutors detailed how she scouted targets and operated getaway vehicles. In some instances, the court revealed, she wielded a realistic-looking dummy bazooka to intimidate victims, while her accomplices were armed with assault rifles.
These operations were not haphazard; court spokesman Ahmad Mohamad noted the "high level of criminal intent," emphasizing that the crimes were planned down to the smallest detail. In total, the group managed to steal approximately $2.8 million from armored cash transports and supermarkets.
The Fall of a Fugitive
Klette's streak of evasion ended in February 2024 when police arrested her in her Berlin apartment. The raid uncovered a clandestine arsenal and a survival kit for a life of deception, including a Kalashnikov assault rifle, multiple wigs, fake identification cards, large sums of cash, and gold.
The court found her guilty of six counts of "particularly serious robbery," along with charges of extortion and arms violations. While the defense team has immediately appealed the verdict, the sentence marks a significant legal milestone.
Ongoing Legal Battles
The current sentencing is not the end of Klette's legal troubles. Prosecutors have also accused her of three politically motivated attacks carried out in the 1990s while the RAF was still active. Those charges are currently being handled in separate legal proceedings, promising further revelations about the activities of the former militant group.
