The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released a latest report this Tuesday indicating that the current El Niño event is on a trajectory to develop into at least a moderate-strength episode. According to current climate models, there is a significant possibility that the event could intensify further in the coming months.
Data from recent monitoring efforts show that sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean have now approached the critical threshold required for El Niño formation. These surface changes are supported by alarming conditions beneath the waves.
Beneath the ocean surface, researchers have detected extensive areas of abnormally warm water. In some regions, temperatures are exceeding the long-term average by more than 6 degrees Celsius. Experts expect this deep-water warmth to provide the necessary energy to sustain and drive continued warming over the next several months, potentially impacting global weather patterns.
