In a significant move that could reshape the political landscape of the Middle East, Israeli lawmakers voted yesterday, June 2, to support a bill aimed at dissolving Parliament and triggering early elections.
The legislation, submitted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition, received the backing of 106 out of 120 Knesset members during its first reading. While the bill must pass two more readings before becoming law, it proposes a new election window between September 8 and October 20, effectively moving up the original deadline of October 27.
Ofir Katz, chairman of the ruling coalition, highlighted the stability of the current term, stating that the Knesset passed over 520 laws and nine budgets over four years, describing the achievement as exceptional in the context of Israeli politics.
However, the push for early elections comes amid mounting internal friction. Netanyahu is currently navigating a precarious relationship with his right-wing coalition, particularly with ultra-Orthodox parties. These groups have accused the Prime Minister of failing to deliver on promises regarding permanent military service exemptions for young men studying in religious seminaries.
At 76, Benjamin Netanyahu remains a central and polarizing figure in Israeli public life. Often called the "phoenix" of the nation's politics, he has served more than 18 years in power since 1996. His bid for another term comes at a challenging time; he recently disclosed surgery for prostate cancer and continues to face a long-running corruption trial.
Public sentiment remains divided. Many citizens hold Netanyahu accountable for the security lapses that led to the unprecedented Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Despite this, a May poll by public broadcaster KAN suggests his Likud party remains narrowly ahead of the joint list Beyahad, led by Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett.
Despite the lead in polling, analysts suggest that neither major camp is likely to secure a clear governing majority, pointing toward a potentially fragmented and complex future for the Israeli government.
