WMO Forecasts Current El Niño Event to Reach Moderate Strength

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released a new report indicating that most climate models forecast the current El Niño event will develop into at least a moderate-strength episode. According to the data released this Tuesday, there is a significant possibility that the event could intensify further in the coming months.

Oceanic Warming Trends

Recent monitoring data shows that sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean have approached the critical threshold required for El Niño formation. This shift in temperature is a primary indicator of the atmospheric and oceanic changes associated with the phenomenon.

Beyond the surface, the WMO has detected extensive areas of abnormally warm water beneath the ocean surface. In some regions, these temperatures exceed the long-term average by more than 6 degrees Celsius. Experts suggest that this subsurface heat will act as a primary energy source, driving continued warming over the next several months and potentially influencing weather patterns across the globe.
