Mainland Reaffirms One-China Principle Amid Taiwan Leader’s ‘Merger’ Remarks

The Chinese mainland has reiterated its unwavering stance on national sovereignty following recent comments by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te, who likened cross-strait reunification to a 'corporate merger.' Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized on Wednesday that 'China's sovereignty and territory have never been divided,' reaffirming the one-China principle as the foundation for peaceful development.

Chen addressed Lai's analogy—which framed the mainland as a 'larger company' and Taiwan as a 'smaller company'—by stressing that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China. 'Achieving national reunification is a shared aspiration of Chinese compatriots and a righteous cause of the Chinese nation,' he stated, underscoring adherence to the 1992 Consensus as a critical framework for dialogue.

The spokesperson extended an olive branch to residents of Taiwan, expressing willingness to engage with 'all political parties, groups, and people from various sectors' to discuss cross-strait relations. This comes amid heightened attention to regional stability, with analysts noting the remarks' significance for investors and policymakers monitoring Asia's geopolitical landscape.
