China is set to host foreign ministers from Pacific Island countries (PICs) this week in Xiamen, marking a significant step in regional diplomacy. The third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting – the first in-person edition held in China – will focus on expanding economic partnerships and addressing shared global challenges.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair the two-day meeting starting May 27, with discussions expected to cover trade, climate resilience, and infrastructure development. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized the forum's role in fostering 'all-round cooperation' through direct dialogue between decision-makers.
Economic ties continue to deepen, with bilateral trade reaching $6.3 billion in 2024 between China and the 11 PICs that maintain diplomatic relations. The recent resumption of China-Nauru relations in January 2024 underscores growing regional engagement, bringing China's diplomatic partner count to 183 nations worldwide.
Analysts suggest the meetings could yield new agreements on sustainable development projects and cultural exchanges, building on China's existing partnerships in fisheries, telecommunications, and renewable energy sectors across Oceania.
