Xi Jinping Hails 20th Western China International Fair in Chengdu

Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored the strategic importance of regional cooperation and global economic integration in a congratulatory letter to the 20th Western China International Fair, which opened Sunday in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The five-day event, running through May 29, brings together businesses and policymakers to showcase innovations and strengthen cross-border partnerships.

Xi emphasized the fair's role in advancing the 'development of western China and fostering international connectivity' amid shifting global economic dynamics. He noted that the event aligns with China's broader goals of 'high-quality growth' and 'opening-up to promote shared prosperity.'

First launched in 2000, the fair has evolved into a key platform for industries ranging from advanced manufacturing to green energy. This year's edition features over 1,200 exhibitors from 48 countries and regions, with a focus on digital transformation and sustainable infrastructure projects.

Analysts highlight the fair's growing relevance as western China emerges as a hub for tech innovation and cross-continental trade routes. 'This event bridges the gap between local enterprises and global markets,' said Li Qiang, a Chengdu-based trade representative. 'It's a litmus test for emerging economic trends across Asia.'

Organizers report that agreements signed during the fair are expected to exceed $15 billion, with significant investments in renewable energy and smart city technologies.
