Iran-US Talks in Rome Yield Limited Progress, Oman Mediates

The fifth round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States concluded in Rome on Friday, with Omani mediators describing progress as “limited but inconclusive.” The talks, held at the Omani Embassy, aimed to address longstanding disputes over nuclear activities and sanctions relief.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi announced via social media that both sides had advanced discussions but emphasized unresolved issues. “We hope to clarify the remaining points in the coming days to reach a sustainable and honorable agreement,” he stated.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff led the three-hour session, which reportedly focused on uranium enrichment demands and sanctions. While the U.S. reiterated calls for Iran to halt enrichment, Tehran rejected “zero enrichment” proposals and pressed for economic sanctions to be lifted.

Oman has played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue between the two nations, which have not maintained direct diplomatic relations since 1980. Analysts suggest the incremental progress reflects both sides’ cautious approach to rebuilding trust amid regional tensions.
