BYD Surpasses Tesla in European EV Sales for First Time

China's BYD has overtaken Tesla in European electric vehicle (EV) sales for the first time, marking a pivotal shift in the continent's automotive landscape. According to data from Jato Dynamics released Thursday, BYD sold 7,231 battery-powered EVs in April, narrowly edging out Tesla's 7,165 units.

The Chinese automaker's sales surged 169% year-on-year, while Tesla's European sales dropped 49% amid an aging product lineup and controversies linked to CEO Elon Musk. Analysts describe the reversal as a "watershed moment" for Europe's EV sector, which grew 28% overall in April.

"BYD's rise reflects both China's manufacturing prowess and changing consumer preferences," said automotive analyst Li Wei. "European buyers are increasingly valuing affordability and innovation over brand legacy."

Other traditional automakers also outperformed Tesla last month, with Renault, Škoda, Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW all recording higher pure EV sales. The trend highlights intensifying competition as global automakers vie for dominance in the world's second-largest EV market.

The development comes as European regulators scrutinize Chinese EV subsidies, with potential tariffs under discussion. BYD's success demonstrates China's growing influence in green technology sectors despite geopolitical headwinds.
