The 2024 Taklimakan Rally launched its first competitive stage in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Wednesday, sending drivers and riders through the rugged Wensu Grand Canyon. The 160-kilometer route in Aksu Prefecture tested competitors with washed-out trails, river crossings, and high-speed stretches against a backdrop of dramatic rock formations.
Motorcycle category leader Martin Michek of the Czech Republic secured an early advantage, completing Stage 1 in 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 36 seconds for the Hoto Factory Racing Team. In the car division, Fan Gaoxiang and navigator Fu Liguo from Hebei Qian'an Jiujiang Auto and Motorcycle Sports Club dominated with a time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 11 seconds.
Fan described the opening stage as "a smooth warm-up," while anticipating tougher desert challenges ahead. The rally now moves toward Alar for a 115-kilometer second stage, where shifting sands will replace canyon speed runs.
As one of Asia's most demanding motorsport events, the Taklimakan Rally combines athletic skill with strategic navigation through Xinjiang's diverse terrain. This year's route reversal—starting where last year's competition ended—adds fresh complexity for returning teams.
