Northern China Heatwave Breaks Ground Temperature Records

A historic heatwave has swept across northern China, with ground temperatures exceeding 70°C in multiple regions on May 20. The extreme conditions highlight growing climate challenges in one of Asia's most populous areas.

Record-Breaking Temperatures

Shanxi Province's Yongji City recorded a scorching 71.1°C ground temperature, while Pingyao City reached 70.3°C. In the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Tongxin Railway Station saw surface temperatures hit 70.1°C. Yongji later peaked at 71.5°C in the afternoon – the highest May temperature ever recorded locally and second only to its 71.9°C reading from June 2024.

Regional Impact

Meteorologists attribute the phenomenon to high-pressure systems and arid conditions. While air temperatures remained lower, the extreme ground heat poses risks to agriculture, infrastructure, and public health. Authorities have issued heat advisories urging residents to limit outdoor activities.
