Brazil’s Poultry Industry Hit by First Bird Flu Outbreak on Commercial Farm

Brazil, the world's largest poultry exporter, has confirmed its first cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) on a commercial farm, triggering immediate trade restrictions from key markets. The detection in Espírito Santo state marks a critical shift for an industry that previously reported cases only in wild birds.

The outbreak has prompted import bans from the European Union and several South American neighbors, raising concerns about global poultry supply chains. Brazil accounts for nearly 35% of global chicken exports, with shipments valued at $9.7 billion in 2022.

While authorities emphasize there is no risk to human health through properly cooked poultry, the economic implications are significant. Analysts warn prolonged trade disruptions could impact global food prices and accelerate diversification efforts among importers.

The discovery comes as Asian markets strengthen biosecurity measures, with Japan and China increasing inspections of Brazilian meat products. Industry representatives stress the need for transparent communication to maintain consumer confidence in one of Brazil's most vital agricultural sectors.
