China has called for urgent de-escalation in the Red Sea and a renewed push for political dialogue to resolve Yemen’s protracted crisis, emphasizing humanitarian concerns amid rising regional tensions. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council briefing on Wednesday, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative Sun Lei stressed the need for restraint following recent U.S. and British air strikes on Yemen and clashes between Houthi forces and Israel.
“The situation in the Red Sea continues to be volatile, which is concerning,” Sun said, acknowledging efforts by Oman and other nations to broker a fragile ceasefire. He urged all parties to avoid actions that could “exacerbate tensions” and emphasized the critical need to protect commercial shipping lanes and uphold Yemen’s sovereignty.
Sun reaffirmed China’s stance that Yemen’s complex challenges demand a political solution “led by Yemenis themselves,” while urging international support for humanitarian aid. Over 21 million people in Yemen require assistance, with funding shortages and security risks severely hampering relief efforts.
The diplomat also linked tensions in the Red Sea to broader instability, including the Gaza conflict. “The international community should prioritize achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza to deescalate regional tensions,” he stated, criticizing Israel’s renewed military actions and blockade as destabilizing.
China’s remarks underscore its growing diplomatic engagement in Middle Eastern affairs, balancing calls for dialogue with support for UN-led initiatives. Analysts suggest the approach aligns with Beijing’s broader strategy to position itself as a stabilizing force in global hotspots.
