UNIFIL Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lazaro Saenz emphasized the critical role of peacekeeping efforts during heightened regional instability in a recent interview with CGTN. Speaking from Lebanon, he underscored the complexities of maintaining stability as head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which operates under a mandate to de-escalate conflicts and foster dialogue.
"Peacekeeping is not easy work, especially in times of crisis. But it reflects the international community's commitment under the UN framework," Lazaro told CGTN correspondent Han Bin. The discussion focused on UNIFIL's strategies during escalating tensions in 2023, including engagement with local communities and coordination with Lebanese authorities to prevent escalation.
Lazaro stressed the importance of neutrality and trust-building in conflict zones, noting that UNIFIL's presence remains "a symbol of hope" for civilians. He also highlighted the challenges of balancing security priorities with humanitarian needs amid resource constraints.
