China, Uruguay Strengthen Ties in Beijing Diplomacy Talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Uruguayan counterpart Mario Lubetkin in Beijing on Monday, emphasizing enhanced cooperation between Asia and South America. The high-level discussion focused on economic partnerships, technological collaboration, and agricultural innovation ahead of the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations.

Wang, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated: "Our dialogue reflects the shared commitment to open multilateralism and South-South cooperation. We welcome Uruguayan agricultural expertise while exploring new opportunities in digital infrastructure."

Lubetkin highlighted Uruguay's strategic position in Mercosur, noting "Our US$6.2 billion annual trade relationship with China shows balanced growth potential, particularly in sustainable tech and value-added food exports."

Analysts suggest the meeting signals China's expanding engagement with non-traditional partners in Latin America, with 37% growth in two-way agricultural trade since 2020. The diplomats also discussed expanding tourism links and cultural exchanges through Uruguay's newly launched Confucius Institute.
