China, Switzerland Push for Free Trade Pact Upgrade During High-Level Talks

Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng emphasized the importance of upholding free trade and open markets during a high-level meeting with Swiss Confederation President Karin Keller-Sutter and Vice President of the Federal Council Guy Parmelin in Geneva on Friday. Against the backdrop of a complex global economic landscape, both nations pledged to deepen collaboration to address shared challenges.

He underscored the urgent need to advance negotiations on upgrading the China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement (FTA), stating that an updated pact would boost economic resilience and contribute to global stability. Switzerland’s leaders echoed this sentiment, with Parmelin affirming support for multilateral trade systems and expressing readiness to expedite FTA discussions.

The talks coincided with preparations for the Switzerland-China Year of Culture and Tourism in 2025, marking 75 years of diplomatic ties. Keller-Sutter highlighted plans for cross-cultural exchanges and expanded cooperation in technology, green energy, and tourism as part of efforts to elevate bilateral relations.

Analysts suggest the upgraded FTA could streamline digital trade protocols and address supply chain concerns, offering new opportunities for businesses in both regions. The dialogue reinforces Switzerland’s role as a key European partner for China amid shifting trade dynamics.
