Geneva, May 8, 2025 – Delegates from over 30 developing countries and international organizations convened in Geneva this week to address rising global trade tensions and strengthen economic collaboration. The dialogue, co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations Office in Geneva and the South Center, underscored the shared challenges faced by emerging economies amidst protectionist policies.
Multilateral Solutions Take Center Stage
Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the UN Office in Geneva, criticized unilateral tariff measures as “severe disruptions” to the global economic order. He emphasized China's commitment to fostering “win-win cooperation” through multilateral frameworks like the WTO, urging developing nations to unite in defending fair trade practices.
The Cost of Protectionism
Wu Hailong, president of the China Public Diplomacy Association and South Center board member, highlighted how recent trade restrictions have destabilized supply chains and financial markets. Participants echoed concerns that developing countries bear disproportionate impacts from such measures, risking progress toward the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
A Unified Path Forward
The dialogue concluded with broad consensus on enhancing South-South trade partnerships. The South Center, now representing 55 member states, reaffirmed its role as a platform for advancing developing nations' collective interests. Delegates pledged to strengthen multilateral engagement to ensure inclusive growth in an increasingly fractured global economy.
