China Urges Global Unity on WWII History, UN Role at Commemorative Event

Chinese ambassador to the UN Fu Cong called for a renewed commitment to historical accuracy and multilateral cooperation during a UN General Assembly (UNGA) event marking the 80th anniversary of WWII's end. The gathering honored victims of the conflict, with Fu emphasizing China's sacrifices and contributions to defeating fascism.

Nearly 80 nations attended the May 8 commemoration, where Fu highlighted China's role as 'the main Eastern battlefield' in WWII. 'Over 35 million Chinese casualties bought crucial time for Allied forces while containing Japanese militarism,' he stated, describing this as part of humanity's shared struggle against aggression.

The ambassador drew parallels to current global challenges, cautioning against rising unilateralism. 'Some actors glorify past invasions or manipulate historical narratives—this insults both victims and modern principles,' he warned. Fu specifically criticized nations that 'use the UN selectively' through inconsistent funding and participation.

His speech outlined three priorities: reinforcing the UN's central role, upholding international law, and rejecting 'bullying tactics' in global affairs. The remarks come amid ongoing debates about reforming multilateral institutions to address contemporary security and economic challenges.

Academics note the timing aligns with China's increasing diplomatic engagement through platforms like the Global Security Initiative. 'This isn't just about WWII—it's about shaping consensus on managing today's conflicts,' said Singapore-based analyst Li Mingwei.
