12 Dead in Indonesia’s West Sumatra Bus Crash Amid Brake Failure

At least 12 people were killed and five others injured when a bus operated by Antar Lintas Sumatra (ALS) overturned in Padang Panjang city, West Sumatra province, on Tuesday morning. Authorities confirmed the single-vehicle accident occurred after the bus reportedly experienced brake failure while navigating a curve at high speed.

The bus was en route from Medan to Jakarta when it lost control, according to Arkes Refagus, head of the Padang Panjang transport department. "The ALS bus experienced brake failure while moving at high speed. It failed to negotiate a bend and rolled over," Refagus stated, emphasizing the investigation is ongoing.

ALS, a prominent intercity bus operator in Sumatra, has not yet issued a public statement. The incident highlights renewed concerns over road safety and vehicle maintenance standards in Indonesia's transportation sector.
