As the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations approaches in 2025, cultural exchanges take center stage with a symbolic musical collaboration. European theater icons Maya Hakvoort and Mate Kamaras, famed for their lead roles in the timeless production Elisabeth, delivered a stirring performance at Beijing’s Tianqiao Performing Arts Center on April 22.
The concert featured highlights from Elisabeth, where Hakvoort portrayed Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Kamaras embodied the enigmatic 'Death,' alongside selections from other European musical classics. The event drew a diverse audience of diplomats, arts enthusiasts, and local residents, showcasing music’s universal power in bridging cultures.
“Art transcends borders,” Hakvoort remarked backstage. “Performing here feels like a tribute to decades of mutual respect.” Kamaras added, “Collaborations like these remind us that shared creativity strengthens partnerships.”
The concert coincides with preparations for a year-long series of China-EU cultural and economic exchange programs, reflecting growing bilateral engagement. Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1975, China and the EU have expanded trade volumes over 200-fold, reaching $847 billion in 2023.
