Space-Bred Specimens Offer Insights into Biology Beyond Earth

Fruit flies that journeyed to China's space station are now returning to Earth aboard the Shenzhou-19 crewed spacecraft, carrying data that could revolutionize our understanding of biology in space environments. The specimens, part of experiments launched in November 2024 via the Tianzhou-8 cargo spacecraft, represent China's first major initiative studying biological systems in combined hypomagnetic and microgravity conditions.

Why Fruit Flies?

Selected for their short life cycles and genetic similarities to humans, fruit flies have been a cornerstone of biological research for over a century. Their adaptability makes them ideal for studying how organisms perceive magnetic fields and gravity – critical factors for long-term space habitation and deep-space exploration.
