Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazil's Mauro Vieira emphasized solidarity in defending multilateralism and opposing unilateral pressure during high-level talks in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' gathering, highlighted shared commitments to reshaping global governance amid rising geopolitical tensions.
A Stand Against 'Law of the Jungle'
Wang, a senior member of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau, called for China and Brazil to lead efforts in rejecting protectionism and "acts of bullying" in international affairs. Both nations pledged to expand cooperation across trade, technology, and health sectors while pushing for equitable representation of Global South interests through BRICS platforms.
Bolstering the BRICS Agenda
As Brazil assumes this year's BRICS chairmanship, Wang reiterated China's support for prioritizing developmental needs of emerging economies. The discussions occurred ahead of Wednesday's BRICS national security advisors' meeting in Brasília, seen as critical for coordinating responses to food security and climate challenges.
Vieira echoed the urgency, stating: "Our strengthened coordination within BRICS isn't optional—it's essential to stabilize a fragmenting world order." The diplomats agreed to advance cross-continental infrastructure projects and digital economy initiatives through the grouping.
