China, Thailand Strengthen Ties as Bangkok Eyes BRICS Role

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China\u2019s commitment to prioritizing relations with Thailand during talks in Beijing on Monday, highlighting bilateral cooperation in infrastructure, trade, and regional security. The meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa underscored both nations\u2019 shared vision for stability in Southeast Asia.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated that deepening practical collaboration would \u201cbring more certainty to regional peace.\u201d Key agreements include accelerating construction of the China-Thailand railway, expanding giant panda conservation efforts, and combating cross-border telecom fraud.

Notably, China endorsed Thailand\u2019s bid to join BRICS as a partner country, a move Maris described as aligning with \u201cGlobal South cooperation.\u201d Thailand echoed support for advancing the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area upgrade, signaling strengthened economic integration in the region.

Maris emphasized Thailand\u2019s interest in leveraging opportunities from Chinese modernization, framing BRICS membership as a pathway to amplify developing nations\u2019 influence. Both sides pledged to coordinate closely ahead of upcoming ASEAN-related summits.
