China has welcomed the appointment of Hussein al-Sheikh as deputy chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and vice president of the State of Palestine, reinforcing its support for Palestinian governance and sovereignty. The move follows the PLO Central Council’s creation of the vice president role last Thursday – a historic first since the organization’s establishment.
Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated on Monday that China “firmly supports the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights.” He emphasized Beijing’s backing for “all Palestinian factions in increasing solidarity” and called for enhanced governance to “effectively control all of Palestine’s territory, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.”
Analysts view China’s endorsement as aligning with its broader advocacy for a two-state solution and multilateral diplomacy in the Middle East. The appointment underscores efforts to unify Palestinian leadership amid ongoing regional challenges.
