Qingdao Debut for Huabiao Awards as China Marks 120 Years of Cinema

Historic Ceremony Spotlights China's Film Industry Evolution

China's cinematic legacy took center stage in Qingdao this weekend as the 20th Huabiao Film Awards marked 120 years of Chinese filmmaking. The coastal city in Shandong Province hosted the prestigious ceremony for the first time, reflecting its rising status as a hub for creative industries.

Hong Kong actress Kara Wai Ying Hung secured Best Actress for her role in family drama Love Never Ends, while Zhang Yi won Best Actor for space exploration epic Endless Journey. Director Guo Fan, honored as Best Director, surprised attendees by announcing production of Wandering Earth 3, the next installment in China's groundbreaking sci-fi franchise targeting a 2027 release.

Qingdao's Silver Screen Ambitions

The event's relocation to Qingdao underscores the city's "strategic importance in China's cultural ecosystem", according to industry analysts. Local authorities have invested heavily in film studios and production incentives, attracting major projects like the Wandering Earth series.

As fireworks lit up the Yellow Sea coastline, the ceremony paid tribute to milestones from China's cinematic journey – from its first film Dingjun Mountain (1905) to today's VFX-driven blockbusters. With over 8,000 silver screens built nationwide in 2023 alone, the awards highlighted both artistic achievement and the industry's expanding global footprint.
