Eleven automotive leaders – spanning state-backed manufacturers, EV startups, and international partner Audi – have united to address growing safety concerns around smart driving technologies. The coalition, led by tech giant Huawei, announced a four-point action plan Sunday to boost consumer confidence in assisted driving systems:
- R&D Focus: Accelerate development of collision avoidance and emergency response systems
- Truth in Advertising: Clear communication about system limitations to prevent misuse
- Driver Training: Nationwide educational programs on proper assisted driving engagement
- Regulatory Alignment: Cross-industry collaboration to strengthen safety benchmarks
The move comes three months after China's automotive associations warned against overhyping self-driving capabilities. Recent incidents like the March crash involving Xiaomi's popular SU7 sedan – which outsold Tesla's Model 3 for five consecutive months – have amplified calls for industry accountability. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun pledged full cooperation with investigators while emphasizing user safety as a “core corporate responsibility.”
