US Envoy Meets Putin as Trump Touts Ukraine Deal Progress

U.S. President Donald Trump announced progress toward resolving the Ukraine conflict following a three-hour meeting between his envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Trump called the discussions "very close to a deal" in a social media statement, urging Kyiv and Moscow to hold high-level talks to finalize an agreement.

The Kremlin described the meeting as "constructive and very useful," according to foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov. However, leaked details of the U.S. proposal have drawn scrutiny. Washington reportedly seeks formal recognition of Russia’s control over Crimea and occupied territories in southern and eastern Ukraine—a stance conflicting with Kyiv’s constitutional position.

Ukrainian and European officials have pushed back against the plan, advocating for territorial discussions only after a ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his refusal to acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory, while divergent views on sanctions relief and security guarantees further complicate negotiations.

The Trump administration emphasizes urgency, warning it may withdraw from talks without tangible progress. Analysts note the discussions highlight shifting geopolitical dynamics and deepening coordination between Washington and Moscow, despite resistance from European allies.
