First Direct Yangtze Basin-Africa Shipping Route Launched

A historic freight voyage departed Suzhou Port in Jiangsu Province on Thursday, carrying 2,700 domestically manufactured vehicles and construction machinery to Durban, South Africa. The journey marks the launch of the first direct shipping route connecting the Yangtze River economic basin – a powerhouse contributing 46% of China's GDP – directly to African markets.

The new route combines roll-on/roll-off services for wheeled cargo with container shipping capabilities, addressing long-standing logistical challenges in China-Africa trade. Analysts say the corridor will reduce transit times by up to 15 days compared to traditional transshipment routes through Singapore or Colombo.

"This transforms supply chain economics for Chinese manufacturers," said maritime logistics expert Dr. Li Wei. "Automakers and machinery producers in inland provinces can now reach African ports 30% faster, with fewer cargo handlings."

The development comes as bilateral trade between China and Africa reached $282 billion in 2023, with infrastructure equipment and vehicles accounting for 41% of exports. The route will initially operate monthly sailings, with plans to increase frequency as demand grows.
