China Condoles Pope Francis’ Passing, Reaffirms One-China Stance

China extended condolences over the passing of Pope Francis, emphasizing continued efforts to advance relations with the Vatican while reaffirming its position on Taiwan during a Foreign Ministry briefing on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun highlighted recent 'constructive engagement' between Beijing and the Vatican, including dialogue on mutual interests. 'China stands ready to work with the Vatican for continued improvement of China-Vatican ties,' Guo said, underscoring the potential for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

Addressing questions about the Vatican's interactions with the Taiwan region, Guo reiterated China's longstanding stance: 'Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The one-China principle is the political foundation for resolving any international matters involving Taiwan.' He urged 'relevant countries' to align with the principle, which has gained broader global recognition.

Pope Francis, a prominent advocate for interfaith dialogue and social justice, served as head of the Roman Catholic Church for nearly a decade until his passing at age 88. His tenure saw cautious engagement with China, including a provisional agreement on bishop appointments in 2018.
