China's Zhao Xintong scripted a remarkable chapter in snooker history on Monday, defeating 2023 finalist Jak Jones 10-4 to become the first amateur player ever to reach the World Snooker Championship's second round. The victory sets up an unprecedented all-China clash against compatriot Lei Peifan, who stunned 2024 champion Kyren Wilson earlier in the tournament.
The 28-year-old Zhao, competing as an amateur following a 20-month suspension for betting violations, called his performance "a journey of redemption." He told reporters: "Every match now is crucial – not just for this championship, but for rebuilding my career." Zhao will return to professional play next season.
Jones, despite his loss, hailed Zhao's championship potential: "I don't see anyone playing better. If he wins it, I wouldn't be surprised – that would be fantastic for snooker."
Zhao's triumph ensures at least four Chinese players in the last 16 – a new national record. Lei continued his giant-killing streak after eliminating Wilson, while Xiao Guodong scored only his second-ever Crucible victory by defeating Matt Selt 10-4.
The Chinese contingent's success comes amid mixed results: Fan Zhengyi fell 10-6 to Mark Allen, while veteran Mark Williams overcame Wu Yize 10-8 in a dramatic comeback. Six-time ranking event winner Ding Junhui leads Crucible debutant Zak Surety 6-3 in their ongoing first-round match.
Zhao and Lei's three-day quarterfinal battle begins Friday, with both players eyeing a chance to become China's first world champion. "Lei has shown he can win titles," Zhao cautioned. "This will be our biggest test yet."
