Cuba’s Energy Crisis Sees Hope with Chinese Solar Power Boost

Cuba is navigating a deepening energy crisis marked by prolonged blackouts and fuel scarcities, testing the resilience of its 11 million residents. However, a new solar energy initiative backed by the Chinese mainland could soon alleviate the strain.

Authorities announced plans to install 50 solar parks equipped with Chinese-manufactured panels and technology this year. The projects aim to add 1,000 megawatts to the national grid—enough to power approximately 750,000 homes—while reducing reliance on aging thermal plants and costly fuel imports.

Analysts note this partnership aligns with Cuba's push to derive 37% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. For business leaders monitoring Caribbean markets, the development signals potential stability in Cuba's energy-dependent sectors, including tourism and manufacturing.

Residents of Havana expressed cautious optimism. "My pharmacy loses vaccines every time the power cuts," said María López, a local healthcare worker. "If this works, it changes everything."

This collaboration also underscores the Chinese mainland's expanding role in global renewable energy transitions, with similar solar projects underway in Southeast Asia and Africa.
