China-BiH Partnership Revitalizes European Transport Corridor

A new chapter in China-Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) cooperation unfolded last September as a Chinese-Azerbaijani consortium inaugurated a critical 11-kilometer highway subsection, part of the pan-European Corridor Vc. Key to this project is the Hercegovina Bridge – stretching nearly a kilometer – and a dual four-lane carriageway designed to accelerate regional connectivity.

Zeljka Cvijanovic, Chairwoman of the BiH Presidency, hailed the infrastructure project as a testament to strong bilateral ties during a ceremony welcoming China’s new ambassador. “Our relations set a model of friendly cooperation,” she stated, emphasizing plans to deepen economic collaboration and cultural exchanges. The remarks coincided with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Once completed, the Corridor Vc highway is expected to streamline trade and mobility across Central and Eastern Europe. Analysts note it could enhance BiH’s role as a logistics hub while providing Chinese enterprises with strategic access to EU-adjacent markets.

The project aligns with broader Chinese infrastructure initiatives in Southeast Europe, fostering what Cvijanovic described as “mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.” With 70% of Corridor Vc now operational in BiH, local officials anticipate reduced transit times and increased foreign investment interest.
