China Triumphs Over Kuwait 3-1 as Naturalized Star Serginho Debuts

China's national football team secured a decisive 3-1 victory against Kuwait in a closed-door friendly match in Dubai on Saturday, blending strategic gameplay with a historic milestone: the debut of naturalized striker Serginho, who marked his 30th birthday by stepping onto the pitch in national colors.

The team dominated the first half, with defender Li Lei opening the scoring. Kuwait’s own goal doubled China’s lead before Behram Abduweli extended it to 3-0. Coach Aleksandar Janković introduced multiple substitutes in the second half, including Serginho—born in Brazil and later an Italian citizen—who recently completed his naturalization process. Midfielder Wang Yudong also made his first international appearance.

Serginho, now playing for Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League, showcased his commitment to his new team by sharing a photo of his Chinese identification card on social media earlier this week. His inclusion reflects China’s strategy to bolster its squad with seasoned international talent.

With Kuwait scoring a consolation goal late in the match, China now shifts focus to critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia on March 20 and Australia on March 25. Despite current bottom placement in Group C, the team remains within striking distance of qualification, trailing Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia on goal difference.

Football analysts highlight these friendlies as vital preparation for China’s bid to secure one of Asia’s coveted World Cup slots, emphasizing teamwork and adaptability in a highly competitive group.
