Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s commitment to resolving the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue during a high-level meeting with Russian and Iranian counterparts in Beijing on Friday. The trilateral talks, attended by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov Sergey Alexeevich and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, emphasized multilateral cooperation and adherence to international agreements.
Wang outlined a five-point plan advocating diplomatic solutions over unilateral sanctions or military threats. He stressed the importance of respecting Iran’s lawful right to peaceful nuclear energy under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) while urging Tehran to uphold its commitments against nuclear weapon development.
The Chinese foreign minister called for reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a landmark agreement involving Iran, China, Russia, the U.S., and European powers. “All parties should move in the same direction to create conditions for resumed negotiations,” Wang stated, referencing the U.S. withdrawal from the deal in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump, which led to renewed tensions.
Experts suggest China’s proactive role reflects its growing influence in shaping global security frameworks. The meeting’s emphasis on ‘common, comprehensive, and sustainable security’ aligns with Beijing’s broader strategy of promoting multilateralism amid rising geopolitical competition.
With the JCPOA’s future hanging in balance, Wang’s remarks signal China’s intent to serve as a stabilizing force in Middle Eastern affairs while safeguarding its economic and strategic interests in the region.
